Because support workers often spend the most time with clients of anyone on the team, it is important they have a good general knowledge of common mental health concerns. Understanding how people live with anxiety, depression and other concerns will help the support worker be present for clients in a way that is effective and safe.

Assessments
Online participation: Weekly lessons/Ongoing. Students are expected to be active participants in their live lectures. This involves:
Attending online classes and actively engaing in discussion.
Engaging in weekly discussion forums through a discussion post and peer post when required.
Worth 25% of the grade.
Short Answer Questions: Students are to answer 5 short questions using no more than 100 words, per answer. Apply class lectures, textbook readings, and applicable, personal experience. Be sure to give an explanation/provide evidence to back up your answers. Questions will be assigned to students Monday morning in week 2 and are to be returned to the assignment drop box by the Sunday evening of the same week 11:00pm. Worth 20% of the grade.
Major Essay: Students are to create a 500-word essay to answer a question which will be provided based on the course material. Apply class lectures, textbook readings, and applicable, personal experience. Be sure to give an explanation/provide evidence to back up your ideas. Questions will be assigned to students by the Friday morning of week 3 and are to be returned to the assignment drop box by 5:00pm on the Friday of week 5. Worth 35% of the grade.
Final Quiz: The final quiz will be completed on Friday of the last week of class. Access to the quiz will be opened during the class, and students will complete the quiz live in class time. You will have half an hour to complete the quiz. You must have your camera on, and will be supervised by the instructor, as you complete the quiz. Worth 20% of the grade.
Required textbook
A Consice Introduction to Mental Health in Canada, 2nd edition. Goldner, Jenkins, Bilsner.
While you are required to use the 2nd edition of this textbook, you may choose to purchase it as an e-book. Whether the book is a physical copy or an e-book will not affect its use in this course.
